KEY POINTS
- Telavancin (Vibativ) is a lipoglycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of susceptible bacteria through disrupting the cell wall
- Has both the mechanism of action for vancomycin (binding d-ala, d-ala) as well as the mechanism of action for daptomycin (causes depolarization)
- Active against many Gram positive organisms, such as most MRSA
- FDA-approved for pneumonia as well as skin and soft tissue infections (with or without concurrent bacteremia)
- Available IV only
- Administer over at least 60 minutes, has been known to cause red man’s syndrome
- Dose based upon body weight & adjust for renal function
- Can prolong the QTc interval
- May cause patient to have “foamy urine”
- Warnings exist suggesting it not be used in pregnancy or women who may become pregnant
