KEY POINTS
- Ceftazidime (Fortaz, Tazicef) is a third-generation cephalosporin and beta-lactam antibiotic that interferes with cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding-proteins
- Available as a combination product of ceftazidime-avibactam (Avycaz)
- Has activity versus Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Only available as injectable
- Adjust dose for kidney dysfunction
- Highly associated with collateral damage (i.e., the ecological consequences of antibiotic use – such as the induction and spread of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, as well as Clostridium difficile infection)
- Can be useful as a part of combination therapy when treating wounds exposed to salt or fresh water
