- Albendazole (Albenza) is an anthelmintic (anti-worm) medication that works through a complex mechanism that results in energy depletion, immobilization, and worm death
- Can be used for a variety of illnesses caused by worms, including: neurocysticercosis, trichinellosis, toxocariasis, microsporidiosis, tapeworm infection, roundworm infection, and hookworm infection
- FDA approved uses include: hydatid disease, neurocysticercosis
- Beware that for neurocysticercosis steroids should be administered PRIOR to the start of ablendazole, which minimizes inflammatory reactions and can prevent increased intracranial pressure. Concomitant anticonvulsants may also be considered.
- Doses and durations vary considerably by indication
- Beware bone marrow suppression and transaminase elevations as two of the more concerning possible adverse effects
- Pregnancy category C
