KEY POINTS
- Micafungin (Mycamine) is an echinocandin antifungal medication
- Other echinocandins are anidulafungin (Eraxis) and caspofungin (Cancidas)
- Echinocandins work by inhibiting 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthesis, a component of the fungal cell wall
- Echinocandins have activity versus a variety of yeasts, including Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida Krusei
- The most common dose of micafungin is 100mg IV once daily
- 150 mg once daily is typically reserved for esophageal candidiasis
- 50 mg once daily is typically used for prophylaxis
- A common indication for micafungin is for candidemia (i.e., candida in the blood)
- Few drug-drug interactions
- Relatively well tolerated
