A Medical Autocorrect Fail Game: Talk-To-Text Antibiotic Names With Siri

This is a medical autocorrect fail game, which focuses on talk-to-text antibiotic names as translated by Siri. How many can you get right?

Technology can help or hinder, but sometimes it is just plain comical. For anyone in the medical field that uses text messaging or voice-to-text functions, you may have experienced the severe autocorrect fails that come up when using medical terminology or drug names.  For example, when I say “acyclovir” (an antiviral drug) Siri translates that into text as “a cycle of ear.”

Not long ago several people on Twitter were discussing these medical autocorrect fails and it was suggested that creating a list of these may be entertaining. With this in mind the following medical autocorrect fail game was created.

This game is very easy to play. Simply look at the first column of the first table here and try to determine what drug name Siri has translated into that sequence of text. In the second table the answer (column 2) is filled in. The drug category column is there in case you want a little clue. Scroll down to the second table and the answers are listed.

If you are knowledgeable about drug names then you should be able to recognize at least a few of these. I will admit some of the text Siri came up with is a bit bizarre, but hey a little challenge should make this more interesting!

HINT: If you are not sure how we got from Siri’s text to the drug name, try saying Siri’s text aloud. It might help.

Good luck!

Credit to Dr. Monica Mahoney for being the main inspiration for this “for fun” article. Also, credit to Siri for getting several of these spot-on when doing voice-to-text (e.g., ganciclovir, Zosyn, ribavirin, daptomycin).
